‍

Here’s exactly how to file a federal tax extension using TurboTax—step by step:

‍

  1. Log into your TurboTax account and head to "Tax tools" in the menu.
  2. Click "Tools" under "Tax tools" to see what's available.
  3. In the Tools Center, find and click "File an extension".
  4. Hit "Continue" and TurboTax will take you to the Easy Extension page.
  5. You're on the "Federal Return" page now. Click "Continue" to keep going.
  6. Fill in your personal details and click "Continue".
  7. Enter your estimated tax amount in the field.
  8. Click "Continue with extension" to move forward with your filing.
  9. Take a quick look to make sure everything's accurate, then click "Continue".
  10. Create a 5-digit signature PIN—something you'll remember but others won't guess.
  11. Check the "I'm not a robot" box to prove you're human.
  12. All set? Click "Transmit my returns now" and you're done!

📌 Why this matters

Filing a tax extension gives you six extra months to complete your return, pushing your deadline from April 15th to October 15th. This breathing room prevents costly late-filing penalties that start at 5% of unpaid taxes per month. Extensions also preserve your right to file an amended return later if you discover errors or missed deductions. You still owe any taxes by the original deadline, but the extension protects you from the steeper penalties that come with missing the filing date entirely.
