How to Embed a Video in SendGrid Email

Use this interactive demo to learn how to add a clickable video thumbnail and button in a SendGrid email.

Quick summary

Since SendGrid does not support native video playback in emails, you can embed a video by placing a clickable video thumbnail and a linked button in the Design Editor that redirects recipients to the video URL. This workaround lets email marketers drive video views directly from a SendGrid campaign.

Steps

  1. Inside SendGrid's Design Editor, go to the left-side panel and tap the Build tab.
  2. Select Image from the available options, then drag and drop the Image module into your preferred section of the main workspace.
  3. Click Choose Images to Upload and import the video thumbnail or any image related to the video you want to embed.
  4. Click Insert Image to add the uploaded image to the email layout.
  5. Return to the Build tab, select Button, and drag the module into the workspace directly below the video thumbnail.
  6. Configure the Button Module Styles by entering your Button Text and setting the Button URL to the video link you want recipients to visit.
  7. Customize the button's default design — adjust background color, width, height, border style, and other styling options as needed.
  8. Navigate to the main workspace and review the thumbnail and button layout to confirm everything looks correct.
  9. Click Save to apply all changes to the email design.

📌 Why this matters

Embedding video content in email campaigns is one of the most effective ways to boost click-through rates, but most email clients — including those receiving SendGrid emails — do not support native video playback. This demo shows email marketers a practical, widely compatible workaround: using a video thumbnail image paired with a linked button inside SendGrid's Design Editor to simulate an embedded video experience. Mastering this technique helps teams increase engagement, drive traffic to video content, and deliver richer email campaigns without relying on unsupported HTML5 video tags. It is an essential skill for anyone running video-driven email marketing through SendGrid.
