Use this interactive demo to learn how to create branch logic in Microsoft Forms.

‍

‍

Microsoft Forms uses branching logic to create conditional paths, perfect for showing relevant follow-up questions based on answers like service usage or preferences. Follow these steps to set it up:

‍

  1. On your Microsoft 365 main dashboard, click the App launcher (grid icon) in the upper-left corner.
  2. From the app list, select Forms to open Microsoft Forms.
  3. Open the specific form you want to edit.
  4. Click on a question you wish to add logic to, which will activate the editing options for that specific block.
  5. Click the ellipsis (three dots), then select Add branching from the dropdown menu.
  6. Next to each answer choice, use the drop-down menu to select the destination.
  7. Repeat for other questions needing conditional logic to ensure the entire form flows based on user input.
  8. Click Preview to test your branching logic in action before sending it out.
  9. Your form is ready! Click Collect responses to share it.

📌 Why this matters

Branching transforms static surveys into intelligent conversations that adapt to each respondent. Instead of forcing everyone through irrelevant questions, you create personalized paths that keep people engaged and reduce abandonment rates.

The real power lies in data quality improvement—when questions feel relevant, respondents provide more thoughtful answers. You also eliminate the need for multiple separate forms, consolidating complex workflows into a single, smart instrument that automatically segments responses based on user characteristics, saving hours of manual sorting later.
