Use this interactive demo to learn how to build a KPI visual in Power BI step by step.

Quick summary

Creating a KPI visual in Power BI lets you track key metrics at a glance by combining a value, a goal, and a trend in a single chart. This tutorial walks you through selecting the right visual, configuring the Visualizations pane, and mapping your data fields to generate a fully functional KPI.

Steps

  1. Open your Power BI report and select the visual you want to convert or replace with a KPI.
  2. Navigate to the Visualizations pane on the right side of the Power BI canvas.
  3. Click the KPI icon in the Visualizations pane to apply the KPI visual type.
  4. Drag and drop your data fields — such as Value, Target, and Trend Axis — into the KPI visual configuration.
  5. Your KPI visual is now created and will display your metric alongside its target and trend in Power BI.

📌 Why this matters

KPI visuals in Power BI give business users an instant, at-a-glance view of whether key metrics are on track, behind, or exceeding targets — without digging through raw data tables. By combining an actual value, a target goal, and a trend indicator in a single visual, Power BI KPIs help teams make faster, data-driven decisions. This feature is essential for dashboard reporting, executive summaries, and performance monitoring across sales, finance, and operations. Learning to create and configure KPI visuals directly inside Power BI removes the need for third-party tools and keeps your reporting workflow unified.
