Use this interactive demo to learn how to build and assign custom metrics inside Amplitude Experiment.

Quick summary

Custom metrics in Amplitude Experiment let teams define precise, event-based goal measurements tailored to any A/B test. This step-by-step walkthrough shows how to create, label, and save a custom metric directly within the experiment editor's Goals tab.

Steps

  1. In Amplitude's experiment editor, navigate to the Goals tab and click the Pencil icon to begin editing.
  2. Under the Define the Goal section, tap the Create a Custom Metric button.
  3. Click the title field and enter a unique metric label, then write a short description in the field below the title.
  4. Select your preferred Metric Type and Events by opening their respective menus and choosing your desired options.
  5. Tap Save and Close to confirm and save the custom metric.
  6. The custom metric is now created and added to your goal experiment.

📌 Why this matters

Custom metrics in Amplitude Experiment give product and data teams the flexibility to track exactly the user behaviors that matter most to each experiment, rather than relying on generic default measurements. By defining tailored metric types and events, teams can measure precise conversion signals — from micro-interactions to downstream revenue events — directly within the experiment workflow. This level of granularity enables more statistically meaningful A/B test results and faster, data-driven decisions. For organizations running high-velocity experimentation programs, custom metrics are essential for connecting experiment outcomes to real business goals.
