How to Create Breakout Rooms in GoTo Meeting

Updated on:
May 12, 2026
By:
Madhav Bhandari
Use this interactive demo to learn how to set up and launch breakout rooms in a live GoTo Meeting session.

Quick summary

GoTo Meeting breakout rooms let hosts split participants into smaller, focused groups during a live session. This guide walks through every step to create, configure, and start breakout rooms directly from the GoTo Meeting interface.

Steps

  1. In the GoTo Meeting dashboard, locate your scheduled meeting and click the Start button to open it.
  2. Review your meeting settings and click Start My Session to launch the live meeting.
  3. Navigate to the top menu bar and click People to open the participants panel.
  4. Click Create Breakout Rooms to open the breakout room setup dialog.
  5. Set the number of rooms by typing a value into the input field or using the Plus and Minus icons.
  6. Select your preferred room assignment method by ticking the radio button next to your desired option.
  7. Click Preview Rooms to review how participants will be distributed across rooms.
  8. Confirm the room assignment and click Start Breakout to activate the rooms.
  9. The breakout rooms are now live and participants are assigned based on your configuration.

📌 Why this matters

Breakout rooms in GoTo Meeting enable hosts to divide large virtual meetings into smaller, focused group sessions — making it easier to run workshops, training sessions, and collaborative discussions at scale. This feature gives meeting organizers precise control over room count and participant assignment, reducing friction for facilitators managing complex agendas. For teams that rely on structured collaboration, GoTo Meeting's breakout room workflow is a straightforward way to boost engagement and productivity without switching tools.
