Quick summary
A transparent overlay in PowerPoint is created by inserting a rectangle shape over your slide content and adjusting its fill transparency via the Format Shape panel. This technique lets you add a semi-transparent color layer over images or backgrounds without hiding the content beneath.
Steps
- Go to the Insert tab in PowerPoint.
- Click "Shapes" located in the Illustrations tab.
- Select a rectangle shape from the shapes menu.
- Drag and draw a rectangle covering the area you want to overlay.
- Right-click the shape and select "Format Shape".
- In the panel, go to "Fill" and select "Solid Fill".
- Choose a fill color (commonly black, white, or brand color).
- Adjust the Transparency slider (e.g., 30%–70%) to set the desired opacity.
