Use this interactive demo to learn how to add a story as a child work item under an epic in Jira.

Quick summary

In Jira, you can create a story under an epic by opening the epic, using the Add Child Work Item option, and selecting the Story type before filling in details and saving. This step-by-step process helps agile teams maintain clear epic-to-story hierarchy for better sprint planning and backlog management.

Steps

  1. In your Jira project, find and select the epic you want to edit.
  2. Scroll down to the Child Work Items section and click Add Child Work Item.
  3. Click the drop-down menu next to the provided input field.
  4. Select Story from the list of options.
  5. Type the summary of the story into the input field.
  6. Click Create to save the initial story entry.
  7. Fill in additional story details such as Priority, Remarks, Description, and Assignee.
  8. Click Create again to finalize and save all story details.
  9. The story is now created and linked under the selected epic in your Jira space.

📌 Why this matters

Linking stories directly to epics in Jira is essential for agile teams that need clear visibility into how individual tasks roll up into larger initiatives. Proper epic-to-story hierarchy enables accurate sprint planning, backlog prioritization, and progress tracking across releases. Without this structured relationship, teams risk losing context between high-level goals and day-to-day development work. Jira's child work item feature makes it easy to maintain this hierarchy so every story is traceable to a business objective.
