Use this interactive demo to walk through the process of creating a matching quiz in Microsoft Forms.

‍

‍

Microsoft Forms uses the Likert Scale to create a matching experience, which is perfect for testing SaaS knowledge, such as matching software features to their specific use cases. Follow these steps to set it up:

‍

  1. On your Microsoft 365 main dashboard, click Apps to see all apps.
  2. Click on Forms to open Microsoft Forms.
  3. Select New Quiz to enable auto-grading features.
  4. Click the Untitled quiz area to enter a quiz title and specific instructions.
  5. Click Add new and select the Likert question type from the extended menu.
  6. Enter your matching prompt in the main question box (e.g., "Match the feature to its benefit").
  7. List the items to match in the "Statement" rows on the left side.
  8. Type the potential matches into the "Option" columns across the top.
  9. Toggle the Required switch so students or employees cannot skip the matching section.
  10. Once you have finished adding your questions, click Style to customize your quiz's appearance.
  11. Click Collect responses to generate a link and distribute it to your participants.

📌 Why this matters

Matching quizzes test deeper comprehension than multiple choice by requiring participants to demonstrate relationships between concepts rather than simple recall. You can assess whether your team truly understands how different software features connect to business outcomes, not just whether they remember feature names.

This format also eliminates guessing strategies since participants must actively pair items rather than eliminate wrong answers. The visual layout makes complex information more digestible while providing rich feedback data showing exactly where knowledge gaps exist in your organization.
