How to Create a Folder in Notion

Updated on:
May 8, 2026
By:
Madhav Bhandari
Use this interactive demo to learn how to organize your Notion workspace with folders and sub-pages.

Quick summary

In Notion, every page acts as a folder, allowing you to create nested sub-pages that replicate a traditional folder structure. This demo walks you through creating a new page, naming it, and building a multi-level folder hierarchy using the slash command.

Steps

  1. Since every page acts as a folder, select New page to start creating your first folder.
  2. Name your page to give the folder a clear, recognizable title.
  3. Use the slash command (/page) inside your new page to embed a sub-page and create a subfolder.
  4. Name your sub-page to identify this nested folder level.
  5. Continue the loop by using /page again inside the sub-page to create an additional sub-sub-folder, just like nested folders.
  6. View your complete folders directory in the left sidebar menu to confirm the hierarchy.

📌 Why this matters

Notion does not have traditional folders, which can confuse new users trying to organize their workspace. Understanding how to use pages as folders and leverage the slash command to create nested sub-pages unlocks a powerful, scalable way to structure any project or team workspace. This approach gives Notion users a flexible folder-like hierarchy without ever leaving their current workflow. Mastering this technique is essential for anyone looking to build a clean, navigable Notion workspace from scratch.
