How to Create a Drop Down Menu in Wordpress

Updated on:
May 11, 2026
By:
Madhav Bhandari
Use this interactive demo to learn how to build a drop-down navigation menu in WordPress.

Quick summary

Creating a drop-down menu in WordPress requires using the Site Editor and the Navigation block to add submenus to existing menu items. This step-by-step process lets you organise your site's navigation without writing any code.

Steps

  1. From your dashboard, go to Appearance → Editor.
  2. Select the template you want to edit, or click the site preview on the right to open the homepage editor.
  3. Open List View at the top-left corner of your screen using the icon that looks like three horizontal lines.
  4. Select the Navigation block, which may be nested inside blocks like Header, Group, or Row.
  5. In the sidebar, click the Settings icon in the top-right corner (the icon that looks like a square with two uneven columns).
  6. Hover over a menu item and click the three dots that appear.
  7. Click the Add submenu link.
  8. Select the first page you'd like to appear in the drop-down.
  9. Repeat the process until you have added all menu items to the submenu.
  10. Click Save to apply and publish your changes.

📌 Why this matters

Adding a drop-down menu in WordPress is essential for organising complex site navigation and improving the user experience for visitors. WordPress's built-in Site Editor and Navigation block make it possible to create multi-level menus without any plugins or custom code. A well-structured drop-down navigation helps users find content faster and signals clear site architecture to search engines, supporting better SEO performance. Mastering this feature gives WordPress site owners full control over how their pages are grouped and presented to visitors.
