Use this interactive demo to learn how to link ticket dependencies directly in Jira.

Quick summary

Creating a dependency in Jira lets you define blocked relationships between tickets so teams can track blockers and manage sprint workflows more effectively. Use the Linked Work Items feature on any Jira issue to connect related tickets in just a few clicks.

Steps

  1. In your Jira space, find and select the ticket you want to edit.
  2. Scroll down to the Linked Work Items section and click Add Linked Work Item.
  3. Click the first dropdown menu to open the relationship type options.
  4. Select Is Blocked By as the dependency operation.
  5. Tap the search field next to the relationship selector.
  6. Select the ticket you want to use as the dependency from the search results.
  7. Click the Link button to apply and save the changes.
  8. The dependency is now created and added to the selected Jira ticket.

📌 Why this matters

Jira's dependency tracking feature allows agile teams to explicitly define 'blocked by' relationships between issues, giving project managers full visibility into blockers before they derail a sprint. By linking work items directly on a ticket, teams can proactively identify and resolve dependencies without relying on manual status updates or external communication. This built-in dependency management reduces the risk of missed deadlines and keeps cross-functional delivery pipelines running smoothly. For software development teams using Jira, mastering ticket dependencies is essential for accurate sprint planning and efficient release management.
