Use this interactive demo to learn how to duplicate an existing workflow in Jira settings.

Quick summary

Copying a workflow in Jira lets you reuse an existing issue flow as a starting point without rebuilding it from scratch. Navigate to Jira Admin Settings, open Workflows, and use the Copy action to duplicate and rename any active or inactive workflow in seconds.

Steps

  1. In your Jira space, go to the top-right corner and click the Settings icon.
  2. Choose Work Items from the list under Jira Admin Settings.
  3. Go to the left-hand panel and tap Workflows.
  4. Select Active Workflows or Inactive Workflows to find the workflow you want to copy.
  5. Find the target workflow and click the Actions button next to it.
  6. Choose Copy from the actions dropdown to proceed.
  7. Enter a unique workflow name and description into their respective input fields.
  8. Click Copy to save and confirm the duplicated workflow.
  9. The selected Jira workflow will be successfully copied to your space.

📌 Why this matters

Copying a workflow in Jira saves teams significant time by eliminating the need to rebuild complex issue-state configurations from scratch. This feature is especially valuable for organizations managing multiple projects with similar processes, ensuring consistency across boards. Jira's workflow duplication capability lets admins customize a copied workflow independently, reducing the risk of accidentally modifying a live, production workflow. It is a critical productivity feature for Jira administrators scaling agile processes across teams.
