Use this interactive demo to learn how to upgrade a Jira task into an epic in just a few clicks.

Quick summary

Converting a task to an Epic in Jira lets teams restructure their backlog without losing issue history or data. Use the built-in Move action and Work Type selector to change the issue type in seconds.

Steps

  1. In your Jira space, find and select the task you want to convert.
  2. Click Actions in the top-right corner of the issue view.
  3. Choose Move from the list of available options.
  4. Click the Work Type menu to open the issue type selector.
  5. Choose Epic from the work type list.
  6. Click Next to proceed to the confirmation step.
  7. Review the terms, then tap Next again to continue.
  8. Click Confirm to apply the changes and complete the conversion.
  9. The selected task in your Jira space is now converted to an Epic.

📌 Why this matters

Converting a task to an Epic in Jira is essential when scope expands and an issue needs to become a parent-level work item that can contain child stories and tasks. This capability helps agile teams restructure their project hierarchy on the fly without recreating issues or losing existing data. Jira's built-in Move and Work Type tools make it possible to change issue types in seconds, keeping backlogs accurate and sprint planning efficient. Teams that master this workflow reduce administrative overhead and maintain cleaner, better-organized project boards.
