Use this interactive demo to learn how to upgrade a Jira story into an epic in just a few clicks.

Quick summary

Converting a Jira story to an Epic lets teams re-scope work items without losing history or context. Use the built-in Move workflow to change the work type directly from the issue list in seconds.

Steps

  1. In your Jira space, find and select the story you want to convert.
  2. Click the Actions button in the top-right corner of the issue view.
  3. Select Move from the list of available options.
  4. Click the Work Type menu to open the issue type selector.
  5. Select Epic from the list of work type options.
  6. Tap Next to proceed to the confirmation step.
  7. Review the terms, then click Next to continue.
  8. Click Confirm to apply the changes and complete the conversion.
  9. The selected story in your Jira space is now successfully converted to an Epic.

📌 Why this matters

Converting a story to an Epic in Jira is essential when a work item grows beyond its original scope and needs to become a parent-level initiative. This capability lets agile teams restructure their backlog on the fly without losing any existing data, comments, or history tied to the original issue. Using Jira's built-in Move and Work Type workflow, project managers can promote stories to Epics in seconds, keeping sprint planning and roadmap reporting accurate. It eliminates the need to delete and recreate issues, saving time and preserving traceability across the entire project lifecycle.
