Use this interactive demo to learn how to automate GitHub events into Slack notifications with a Zap.

Quick summary

Zapier lets you connect GitHub source control with project tools like Slack by building automated Zaps that trigger actions whenever repository events occur. This no-code integration eliminates manual status updates and keeps development teams instantly informed of code changes.

Steps

  1. From your Zapier dashboard, select Zap to start building a new automation.
  2. Click on the Trigger field to begin selecting your trigger event.
  3. Search and select GitHub as your trigger app.
  4. Select a trigger event from the available GitHub event options.
  5. Connect your GitHub account to authorize Zapier access.
  6. Configure the event details and click Continue to proceed.
  7. Click Test trigger to verify the GitHub connection returns sample data.
  8. Search and select Slack as the action app.
  9. Select an action event to define what Slack does when the trigger fires.
  10. Connect your Slack account to authorize the action step.
  11. Configure the action details and click Continue to finalize the setup.
  12. Click Test step to confirm the Slack action executes correctly.
  13. Once the test is successful, click Publish to activate your Zap.

📌 Why this matters

Connecting GitHub to project communication tools like Slack via Zapier eliminates the manual effort of tracking code changes and notifying teammates. Development teams can automatically receive real-time Slack messages whenever a GitHub event — such as a new pull request, push, or issue — occurs, keeping everyone aligned without leaving their workflow. This GitHub-Slack automation reduces context switching, accelerates incident response, and ensures no critical repository activity goes unnoticed. For engineering teams scaling their DevOps processes, Zapier's no-code Zap builder makes setting up and maintaining these integrations fast and accessible without requiring custom scripts or API knowledge.
