Use this interactive demo to learn how to switch the workflow scheme on any Jira project.

Quick summary

Changing the workflow scheme in Jira lets you reassign the issue lifecycle rules for an entire project in just a few clicks. Navigate to Space Settings, select a new scheme, and confirm with Associate to apply the change immediately.

Steps

  1. On Jira's main home page, go to the left-hand panel and click Spaces.
  2. Find the project (space) you want to edit and click the More Actions button next to it.
  3. Select Space Settings from the dropdown list of options.
  4. In the left-side panel of Space Settings, click Workflows.
  5. Click Switch Scheme to begin changing the workflow scheme.
  6. Open the Scheme menu and choose the new workflow scheme you want to apply.
  7. Click Associate to proceed to the next step.
  8. Review the structure of the selected workflow, then tap Associate again to confirm the change.
  9. The workflow scheme for the selected Jira project is now successfully updated.

📌 Why this matters

Switching the workflow scheme in Jira allows project admins to redefine how issues move through statuses — from To Do to Done — without rebuilding the entire project. This is critical for teams scaling their processes, adopting new delivery methodologies, or aligning multiple projects to a standardized workflow. Getting the workflow scheme right ensures that every team member follows the correct approval gates, transitions, and statuses. Jira's workflow scheme management gives admins precise control over project governance at scale.
