Use this interactive demo to learn how to reorder object layers in Google Slides.

Quick summary

Changing the layer order in Google Slides lets you control which objects appear in front of or behind others on your slide. Use the Arrange > Order menu to bring objects forward or send them backward in just a few clicks.

Steps

  1. Go to the slide that contains the object you want to reorder.
  2. Click the object on the slide canvas to select it.
  3. In the top menu, click Arrange.
  4. From the dropdown menu, hover over Order.
  5. Choose Bring to front, Bring forward, Send backward, or Send to back depending on how you want to change the layer.
  6. Your object will now appear in its new layer position on the slide.

📌 Why this matters

Controlling layer order in Google Slides is essential for creating polished, professional presentations where overlapping objects — such as images, shapes, and text boxes — display in the correct visual hierarchy. The Arrange menu's Order options give users precise control to bring elements to the front or push them to the back without rebuilding slide layouts. This saves time and prevents formatting errors when working with complex, multi-element slides. Mastering layer management in Google Slides directly improves design efficiency and presentation quality.
