How to Change from Premium to Free in TurboTax

Use this interactive demo to learn how to change from Premium to Free in TurboTax.

To change from premium to free, follow these steps:

Open your TurboTax account and click "Price preview" to see which product you're currently using.
You'll notice you're on a Premium product. Let's switch that to Free.
In the left menu, click "Switch Products" to explore your options.
Select "Downgrade" to move to a lower-tier product.
Click "Downgrade to Free Edition" and you're all set—as long as you haven't paid or filed yet.

📌 Why this matters

Switching to the free version saves you money when your tax situation turns out simpler than expected. You might have started with Premium thinking you'd need advanced features for investment income or rental properties, but then realized your taxes are straightforward enough for the basic version. Making this change before filing also prevents you from being locked into unnecessary premium features that inflate your tax prep costs without adding real value to your specific situation.
