Use this interactive demo to learn how to assign story points to tickets in your Jira scrum board.

Quick summary

Adding story points in Jira lets agile teams estimate effort directly on backlog tickets using the Story Point Estimate field. This four-step process requires no extra configuration — just a few clicks from your scrum board's More Actions menu.

Steps

  1. In your Jira scrum board, find the ticket you want to edit and click the More Actions button next to it.
  2. Hover your mouse cursor over the Story Point Estimate option in the dropdown menu.
  3. Enter your preferred story point value into the input field, or adjust it using the spin buttons next to it.
  4. Click the Check button to apply the changes and save the story points to the ticket.
  5. The story points are now successfully added to the selected Jira ticket in your scrum board.

📌 Why this matters

Story points are a core agile estimation tool that help scrum teams forecast sprint capacity and prioritize backlog items accurately. In Jira, assigning story points directly from the backlog view makes sprint planning faster and more consistent across the team. Without a clear process, teams often skip estimation or enter inconsistent values, leading to overloaded sprints and missed deadlines. This demo shows exactly how to set story point estimates in Jira in under a minute, ensuring every ticket is properly sized before it enters a sprint.
