Use this interactive demo to learn how to link tasks with dependencies in Microsoft Project.

Quick summary

This tutorial shows how to add task dependencies in Microsoft Project by selecting tasks and using the Link Tasks button to create Finish-to-Start relationships. Setting dependencies ensures your project schedule accurately reflects the order in which work must be completed.

Steps

  1. Open Microsoft Project and navigate to the Task tab in the ribbon at the top of the screen.
  2. Select the tasks you want to link — click a single task or hold Ctrl to select multiple non-adjacent tasks in your project plan.
  3. Click the Link Tasks button in the Schedule group to automatically create a Finish-to-Start dependency between the selected tasks.
  4. Confirm the dependency arrows now connect your tasks on the Gantt chart, visually showing the task relationships you have created.

📌 Why this matters

Task dependencies in Microsoft Project are essential for building accurate, realistic project schedules. By linking tasks with Finish-to-Start relationships, project managers can ensure that no downstream work begins before its predecessor is complete, preventing scheduling conflicts. Properly defined dependencies also allow Microsoft Project to automatically recalculate timelines when changes occur, saving hours of manual rescheduling. This makes dependency management one of the most critical skills for anyone responsible for delivering projects on time and within scope.
