Use this interactive demo to learn how to invite and set up an advisor in Xero.

Quick summary

Adding an advisor in Xero takes just a few steps: navigate to Settings, open the Users section, and send an advisor invitation with the right permissions. Once accepted, the advisor gains access to your Xero organization with full accounting visibility.

Steps

  1. On the Xero main dashboard, go to the top-left corner and click the Company tab.
  2. Choose Settings from the list of options.
  3. Tap Users to proceed to the user management section.
  4. Click Invite a User in the top-right corner.
  5. Enter the new user's name and email address into their respective fields under the Personal Details section.
  6. Scroll down to the Permissions section and tick the checkbox beside Business and Accounting.
  7. Select the Advisor radio button to assign the advisor role.
  8. Optionally, tick Add a Message to personalize the invitation with a custom note.
  9. Click Send Invite to dispatch the invitation.
  10. Once accepted, the new advisor will be added to your Xero organization.

📌 Why this matters

Granting advisor access in Xero allows accountants and bookkeepers to collaborate directly inside your accounting software without sharing owner-level credentials. The dedicated Advisor role provides the right level of permissions — including full access to business and accounting data — while keeping your organization secure. For small business owners using Xero, this feature streamlines collaboration with external financial advisors and reduces manual back-and-forth. Setting up an advisor correctly ensures your financial data is reviewed accurately and compliantly in real time.
