Use this interactive demo to learn how to create and link a new task inside a Jira epic.

Quick summary

Adding a new task to an epic in Jira takes just a few clicks using the Child Work Items panel inside any epic issue. Once you create the task, you can immediately enrich it with details and begin implementation without leaving your Jira project.

Steps

  1. In your Jira space, find and select the epic you want to edit.
  2. Scroll down to Child Work Items and click the Add icon next to it.
  3. In the input field, confirm that Task is selected in the type menu.
  4. Type the summary of the task in the provided field.
  5. Click the Create button to apply the changes and save the new task.
  6. The new task is now linked to the selected epic; add further task details and start implementing as needed.

📌 Why this matters

Jira's epic and child work item structure lets agile teams break large initiatives into trackable, assignable tasks without losing the big-picture view. Adding a task directly to an epic ensures every piece of work is properly scoped, prioritized, and visible within the project backlog. This tight parent-child linking reduces planning overhead and keeps cross-functional teams aligned on sprint goals. Teams that consistently link tasks to epics gain clearer velocity metrics and faster release cycles.
