Use this interactive demo to learn how to create and configure a custom field in your Jira project.

Quick summary

Adding a custom field in Jira lets teams capture project-specific data beyond default issue fields, improving tracking and reporting accuracy. This demo walks through every step — from opening Space Settings to clicking Create Field — so you can extend Jira to fit your workflow.

Steps

  1. In your Jira space, go to the top navigation bar and click the More Actions button next to its name.
  2. Choose Space Settings from the list of options.
  3. Head over to the left-side panel and click Fields.
  4. Click Add Field in the top-right corner.
  5. Tap Create a New Field to proceed.
  6. Fill out the input fields one by one with required information such as Name, Field Type, and Description.
  7. Once done, click Create Field.
  8. Your new custom field will now be added to your Jira space.

📌 Why this matters

Custom fields in Jira allow teams to track metadata that default issue fields don't support, such as department tags, priority scores, or regulatory categories. By adding custom fields directly through Space Settings, project administrators can tailor Jira to match unique team workflows without third-party plugins. This flexibility makes Jira a more powerful project management tool for software, operations, and cross-functional teams. Knowing how to create custom fields quickly reduces configuration time and keeps projects structured from day one.
