Use this interactive demo to learn how to link a blocking ticket to any issue in Jira.

Quick summary

Adding a blocker in Jira lets teams flag when one ticket is blocked by another, making dependencies visible on the board. Use the Linked Work Items feature to connect issues and keep your project workflow moving.

Steps

  1. In your Jira space, find and select the ticket you want to edit.
  2. Scroll down to the Linked Work Items section and click Add Linked Work Items.
  3. Open the first dropdown menu and select Is Blocked By.
  4. Click the input field next to the dropdown and search for the ticket you want to use as a blocker.
  5. Click the Link button to apply the changes.
  6. The blocker is now added to the selected ticket in your Jira space.

📌 Why this matters

Tracking blockers in Jira is essential for agile teams that need full visibility into issue dependencies and sprint health. By linking tickets with an 'Is Blocked By' relationship, project managers can instantly identify bottlenecks before they delay delivery. This built-in dependency management helps engineering and product teams prioritize unblocking work and maintain accurate board status. Clear blocker visibility reduces stand-up confusion and keeps cross-functional teams aligned on what needs to move next.
