Use this interactive demo to learn how to create a Backlog column on your Jira Kanban board.

Quick summary

Adding a Backlog column to a Jira Kanban board is done through Board Settings, where you can create and name a new column under the Layout section. Once saved, existing work items can be dragged from Unmapped Statuses into the new Backlog column to keep your board organised.

Steps

  1. In the board view of your Jira space, go to the top navigation bar and click the 'More Options' button next to the board name.
  2. Choose 'Board Settings' from the list of options.
  3. Click the 'Layout' tab in the left-hand panel.
  4. Select 'Columns' from the list of options.
  5. Tap the 'Add' button to proceed.
  6. Type 'Backlog' into the column name input field.
  7. Click the 'Check' icon to apply and save the changes.
  8. If you have existing work items, drag them from the Unmapped Statuses column onto the newly created Backlog column.
  9. The Backlog column is now added to your Jira Kanban board.

📌 Why this matters

Adding a dedicated Backlog column to a Jira Kanban board gives agile teams a structured place to capture and prioritise unscheduled work without cluttering active workflow stages. This keeps the board clean, reduces the risk of work items getting lost in Unmapped Statuses, and improves sprint planning visibility. For teams scaling their Jira usage, customising board columns directly from Board Settings means you can tailor workflows to match your exact process without needing admin-level intervention. It is a simple but high-impact configuration that improves overall project management efficiency in Jira.
