Use this interactive demo to learn how to draw and customize vector shapes with the Pen tool in Figma.

Quick summary

The Figma Pen tool lets you draw custom vector shapes by plotting anchor points on the canvas and closing the path to form any object. Once your shape is complete, you can refine it using the Bend tool for curves and the Paint Bucket tool to apply color.

Steps

  1. Navigate to the bottom section of your Figma design canvas and click the Pen icon to activate the tool.
  2. Click anywhere on the canvas to plot your first vector point.
  3. Drag your cursor to the next desired position and click once to plot another vector point.
  4. Repeat the process of clicking to add vector points until you have formed your desired shape or object.
  5. Return to the starting point and click the first vector point to close the path.
  6. Use the Bend tool to add curves and the Paint Bucket tool to fill the shape with your preferred color.
  7. Once satisfied, incorporate the final vector output into your overall Figma design.

📌 Why this matters

Figma's Pen tool is one of the most powerful features for UI designers and illustrators who need to create precise, scalable vector graphics directly within their design workflow. Mastering the Pen tool allows designers to draw custom shapes, icons, and illustrations without switching to a separate vector application. The ability to close paths, apply curves with the Bend tool, and fill shapes with the Paint Bucket tool makes Figma a complete end-to-end vector design environment. For teams collaborating on product design, knowing how to use the Pen tool in Figma accelerates asset creation and keeps design work centralized in one platform.
