Use this interactive demo to learn how to effectively utilize the Find and Replace tool in Alteryx.

‍

It is very easy to use the Find and Replace tool in Alteryx. Here’s a short tutorial on how to do it in simple steps:

  1. Inside Alteryx's workflow designer, head over to the left-side panel and find 'Find and Replace'. Drag it onto the canvas for further customization.
  2. After that, go to the first Input Data tool that contains your primary data and connect it to the input anchor (F) of your Find and Replace tool.
  3. Likewise, head over to another Input Data tool in the canvas that contains your secondary data. Connect its output anchor to the other input anchor (R) of your Find and Replace tool.
  4. Tap the Find and Replace tool to start making your desired configurations.
  5. Following that, go to the right-side panel to access the tool's settings page. To get started, go to the Search Criteria section and choose one from the list.
  6. Specify the column you wish to search and the column where you want to find values.
  7. Subsequently, go to the Replace section and choose 'Replace Found Text'.
  8. Tap the 'Replace Value' menu afterwards, then select the column that contains the data you want to use as replacements for the indicated values.
  9. Finally, the Find and Replace tool will process your data and make the corresponding data changes according to your configurations.

📌 Why this matters

The Find and Replace tool lets you systematically update values across datasets by matching and substituting text or numbers based on lookup tables. Beyond simple text swaps, you're essentially performing data standardization at scale—cleaning inconsistent product codes, harmonizing customer names, or updating pricing across thousands of records. This becomes powerful when your replacement values come from dynamic sources like databases or spreadsheets that change regularly, turning what would be manual corrections into automated data quality processes that adapt as your reference data evolves.
