Use this interactive demo to learn how to annotate a shared screen in Zoom as a participant.

Quick summary

The Zoom Annotate feature lets meeting participants draw, highlight, and write directly on a host's shared screen in real time. This step-by-step walkthrough covers everything from joining a meeting to closing the annotation toolbar.

Steps

  1. On Zoom's main dashboard, tap the 'Join' button.
  2. Enter the meeting ID into the provided input field and click 'Join'.
  3. Inside the meeting room, head to the bottom-left corner and click the 'Pencil' icon to open the annotate toolbar on the host's shared screen.
  4. Select the annotation tool you prefer to use from the toolbar.
  5. Start making annotations — you may draw, highlight, write, and insert various objects on the shared screen.
  6. Once done, return to the menu bar at the left-side corner and click the 'Close' button to exit annotation mode.

📌 Why this matters

Zoom's built-in Annotate feature empowers meeting participants to actively collaborate by marking up a host's shared screen in real time — without needing any extra tools. This capability is especially valuable for remote teams, educators, and presenters who need to give visual feedback, highlight key information, or co-create ideas during a live session. Enabling annotation as a participant removes communication barriers and turns passive viewers into active contributors. Mastering this feature helps teams run more effective, engaging, and productive Zoom meetings.
