Use this interactive demo to learn how to apply a mask effect to images in Figma.

Quick summary

The Figma mask feature lets designers clip layers using a shape or image to control exactly what is visible in a design. By using Use as Mask under the Design tab, you can apply non-destructive image masking to any set of selected layers in seconds.

Steps

  1. In your Figma design canvas, click the image you want to use as the mask and drag it above the image you wish to mask.
  2. Select all the layers you want to include in the mask.
  3. Open the right-side panel and click the More Options button under the Design tab.
  4. Choose Use as Mask from the list of options.
  5. The mask effect is now applied to all selected layers.

📌 Why this matters

The Figma mask feature is essential for UI designers and visual creators who need precise control over how images and layers are displayed within a design. Masking in Figma allows you to clip any layer to a custom shape or image without permanently altering the original assets, making it a non-destructive and flexible design technique. Understanding how to apply and manage masks directly impacts the quality and efficiency of design workflows, especially when building complex layouts with overlapping visual elements. Whether you are designing app interfaces, marketing assets, or prototypes, mastering Figma masking helps you achieve polished, professional results faster.
