Use this interactive demo to learn how to configure custom working days in Microsoft Project.

Quick summary

Setting working days in Microsoft Project lets you define the exact days and hours your team is available, ensuring accurate project scheduling. You can customize the default work week using the Change Working Time dialog to reflect your organization's real calendar.

Steps

  1. Launch Microsoft Project and locate the Project tab in the ribbon menu.
  2. In the Project tab, find and click Change Working Time in the Properties section.
  3. In the dialog box, click the Work Weeks tab to access working day customization options.
  4. Select the Default work week entry listed and click the Details button.
  5. Click the day(s) you want to modify; hold Ctrl to select multiple non-consecutive days.
  6. Select Set day(s) to these specific working times and adjust the start and finish times in the grid.
  7. Click OK to save the details, then click OK again to close the main dialog and apply your working days.

📌 Why this matters

Accurate working day configuration in Microsoft Project is essential for reliable project scheduling and resource planning. When project managers define the correct work week — including which days are active and what the working hours are — Microsoft Project can calculate task durations, deadlines, and resource availability with precision. Misconfigured calendars lead to missed deadlines and inaccurate Gantt charts, making this a foundational setup step for any project. Mastering the Change Working Time feature ensures your project plan reflects real-world team capacity from day one.
