Use this interactive demo to learn how to configure non-working days in your Microsoft Project calendar.

Quick summary

Setting non-working days in Microsoft Project lets you accurately reflect holidays, weekends, or shutdowns in your project schedule. This ensures task scheduling and resource planning automatically skip those days, keeping timelines realistic.

Steps

  1. Open your project in Microsoft Project and navigate to the Project tab.
  2. In the Project tab, click Change Working Time.
  3. Click the Work Weeks tab.
  4. Select Default and click Details.
  5. Select the day or days you want to designate as non-working days.
  6. Choose Set days to nonworking time to mark the selected days as non-working.
  7. Set the start and finish time for the working hours adjustment.
  8. Click OK to save your changes.

📌 Why this matters

Accurately defining non-working days in Microsoft Project is essential for realistic project scheduling and on-time delivery. When holidays, shutdowns, or custom rest days are properly configured in the project calendar, Microsoft Project automatically excludes those days from task duration calculations and resource assignments. This prevents scheduling errors that can cascade into missed deadlines and budget overruns. Project managers who master working time settings gain tighter control over project timelines and more dependable delivery forecasts.
