Use this interactive demo to learn how to remove trailing spaces in your Alteryx workflows.

‍

It is very easy to remove the trailing spaces in Alteryx. Here’s a short tutorial on how to do it in simple steps:

  1. Inside Alteryx's workflow designer, head over to the left-side panel and find 'Data Cleansing'. Drag this tool onto the canvas and connect it to the Input Data tool or other sources.
  2. Following that, go to the right-hand panel and make all the necessary configurations. To get started, tick the checkbox beside the field that you want to edit.
  3. Scroll down to the Remove Unwanted Characters section, then tap the checkbox beside 'Leading and Trailing Whitespace'.
  4. Finally, the trailing spaces from the selected field in your Alteryx workflow will be removed.

📌 Why this matters

Trailing spaces break data matching and cause duplicate records during joins, merges, and lookups. What appears as identical data actually differs at the character level, leading to failed connections between datasets. Beyond immediate workflow issues, these invisible characters propagate through your entire data pipeline, creating inconsistencies in reporting and analytics downstream. Clean data matching also improves performance since comparison operations run faster on standardized strings, and prevents user confusion when filtered results seem incomplete due to whitespace variations.
