Use this interactive demo to learn how to rank your data in Alteryx.

‍

It is very easy to rank data in Alteryx. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to do it in simple steps:

  1. Inside Alteryx's workflow designer, head over to the left-side panel and find 'Rank'. Drag this tool onto the canvas and connect it to the Input Data tool or other sources.
  2. After that, go to the right-hand panel to make your desired configurations. To get started, tap the radio button beside the type of ranking you want to implement.
  3. Subsequently, click the 'Add Column' menu and choose the field that contains the data you wish to rank.
  4. Tap the 'Order' menu afterwards, then select one from the available options.
  5. Finally, the data from the selected column in your Alteryx workflow will be ranked accordingly.

📌 Why this matters

Ranking data lets you identify top performers, outliers, and patterns that drive business decisions. You can quickly spot your highest-revenue customers, best-selling products, or most problematic regions. Beyond simple identification, rankings become powerful when combined with percentile analysis and segmentation. Once you rank your data, you can create targeted strategies for different tiers, allocate resources more effectively, and set realistic benchmarks. Rankings also enable you to track performance changes over time, revealing whether your top performers are consistent or if there's regular movement within your hierarchies.
