Use this interactive demo to learn how to outline a picture in PowerPoint.

‍

It is very easy to outline a picture in PowerPoint. Here’s a short tutorial on how to do it in simple steps:

  1. Inside the slide canvas of your PowerPoint presentation, find and select the picture you want to edit.
  2. Following that, go to the top menu bar and click 'Picture Format'.
  3. Subsequently, click the 'Picture Border' option.
  4. Pick the color you wish to use, then configure the Weight and Dashes you wish to set.
  5. Finally, the selected picture in your PowerPoint presentation will be outlined based on your configurations.

📌 Why this matters

Adding outlines to pictures helps you create visual hierarchy and make images pop against busy slide backgrounds. You can match border colors to your brand palette or presentation theme for a cohesive look. Picture outlines also solve a common design problem: when your image has similar colors to the slide background, it can appear to float or blend in awkwardly. A well-chosen border creates clear separation and gives your visuals a more polished, intentional appearance that keeps your audience focused on key content.
