How to Organize Dates by Week in Excel

Use this interactive demo to learn how to organize your dates by week in Microsoft Excel.

Here's how to do it:

‍

  1. Open the file you intend to edit.
  2. Click on "Insert," and select "Pivot Table."
  3. Enter or select the cells containing the data you want to edit in the Table/Range section.
  4. In the Location section, specify where you want the data to appear. Click "OK."
  5. In the ''Rows'' section, drag the ''Date'' field to organize the data by date. Then, in the ''Values'' section, drag the ''Sales'' field and set it to calculate each date's total (Sum).
  6. Right-click on any date in the generated data and select ''Group'' from the context menu.
  7. Select "Days," and under number of days change it to "7."
  8. Your data will now be grouped and displayed by week.

The technique also standardizes irregular data collection, since business activities rarely align perfectly with calendar days but flow more naturally in weekly cycles.
