Quick summary
Moving rows up and down in Microsoft Excel can be done without cut-and-paste by using a Shift-drag technique that inserts rows into a new position without overwriting existing data. This method is the fastest way to reorder rows in an Excel spreadsheet while keeping all your data intact.
Steps
- Click on the row number on the left side of the spreadsheet to highlight the entire row you wish to move.
- Hover your cursor over the border of the selected row until it changes to a four-sided arrow icon.
- Press and hold Shift, then drag the row to the desired position with the mouse, and release the mouse button before releasing Shift to drop it into place.
- Confirm the row has been inserted into the new location without overwriting existing data.
