Use this interactive demo to learn how to mark a task as complete in Microsoft Project.

‍

‍

Here’s how to mark a task as complete in Microsoft Project, step by step:

‍

  1. Open your Microsoft Project and you'll see a bunch of tasks.
  2. Select the task you want to mark as complete.
  3. In the 'Schedule' group, choose '100% Complete' to mark the task.
  4. You can also click on 'Mark Track'.
  5. Then, you can see tasks that are 100% completed under the 'Completed' column.

📌 Why this matters

Marking tasks complete does more than update your project status—it automatically recalculates your entire project timeline, shifting dependent tasks and updating critical path analysis in real-time. When you mark completion, the software instantly shows how this affects downstream deadlines and resource allocation.

This creates a ripple effect that reveals bottlenecks before they become problems and helps you spot opportunities to accelerate other work streams. Your completed tasks also become valuable data for estimating similar future projects with greater accuracy.
