How to Import Excel Into Microsoft Project

Use this interactive demo to learn how to import an Excel spreadsheet into Microsoft Project.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open your Microsoft Project and click 'Open' to start a new file.
  2. Navigate to 'Browse' so you can select a new excel file.
  3. Click on the drop down menu to choose a file.
  4. From the drop down menu, select 'Excel Workbook(*.xlsx)'.
  5. Select the excel file you want to import.
  6. Once you have selected the excel file, click 'Open' to start mapping the file.
  7. Once the file is selected, the Import Wizard opens. Click 'Next'.
  8. Select from the options above on how to import your Excel file in Microsoft Project and click 'Next'.
  9. Decide whether you want to create a 'New map' or 'Use existing map', then click 'Next'.
  10. Select the types of data you want to import from excel and click 'Next'.
  11. Map the specific Excel column headers to the corresponding Microsoft Project fields.
  12. Click 'Finish' to save the action.
  13. That's it! You have successfully imported an Excel file in a Microsoft project.
