How to Group Epics in Jira

Use this interactive demo to learn how to organize and filter epics in Jira using labels.

Quick summary

Jira does not have a native epic grouping feature, but you can group epics using the Labels field and the Issues filter to organize related work. This method lets teams save filtered views and add them to a Jira dashboard for ongoing visibility.

Steps

  1. Open an epic you want to group.
  2. In the issue detail view, find the Labels field.
  3. Add a label that represents the group you want to create.
  4. Apply the same label to all other epics you want to group together.
  5. Go to Issues located in the left-hand main menu.
  6. Select More to expand the available filter options.
  7. Search for the Label filter in the filter search bar.
  8. Select the label to find and display all the grouped epics.
  9. Click Save filter to preserve your filtered view.
  10. Add the saved filter to a Jira dashboard to view and manage grouped epics easily.

📌 Why this matters

Jira lacks a built-in way to group epics across a project, making it difficult for teams to track related initiatives at a glance. By using the Labels field combined with the Issues filter, teams can create flexible, searchable epic groups without any third-party tools. Saving these filtered views to a Jira dashboard gives project managers and stakeholders a persistent, centralized way to monitor grouped epics in real time. This approach improves sprint planning, roadmap visibility, and cross-team alignment directly within Jira.
