Use this interactive demo to learn how to build a competency model survey from scratch in SurveyMonkey.

Quick summary

This tutorial walks you through how to create a competency modelling survey in SurveyMonkey, from setting up your survey structure to distributing it and exporting results for workforce development planning. By the end, you can use the collected data to inform training plans, succession planning, and individual development strategies.

Steps

  1. Click the 'Create survey' button to get started.
  2. Choose a starting point for your survey (from scratch, template, or import).
  3. Enter a survey title that reflects your competency modelling goal.
  4. Decide who the subject of your survey is (e.g., employees, managers, or teams).
  5. Use net promoter scale questions to assess proficiency levels for specific skill-based competencies.
  6. Apply 5- or 7-point rating scales to measure competency levels accurately.
  7. Organize your survey into sections based on competency categories, with each section containing questions that assess the indicators within that category.
  8. Create questions for self-assessment and for gathering feedback from peers, subordinates, and managers.
  9. Use logic branching to direct respondents to relevant questions based on their role.
  10. Click 'Preview survey' to review your survey before distributing it.
  11. Click 'Continue' to proceed past the preview screen.
  12. Distribute the survey and select the individuals who will provide competency feedback.
  13. Export survey results to a CSV or Excel file by clicking 'Print' for in-depth analysis.
  14. Click 'Save as PDF' and convert the data into Excel for further processing.
  15. Click 'Save' to finalize your competency model and use the insights for training plans, succession planning, and individual development plans.

📌 Why this matters

Competency modelling is a foundational HR practice that defines the skills, behaviours, and knowledge employees need to perform effectively in their roles. Using SurveyMonkey to build a competency model survey allows HR teams to collect structured, multi-rater feedback — including self-assessments and input from peers, managers, and subordinates — at scale. The ability to segment questions by competency category, apply rating scales, and use logic branching makes it easy to gather precise, role-specific data. Once results are exported and analysed, organisations can directly link competency gaps to targeted training plans, succession pipelines, and individual development programmes.
