Use this interactive demo to learn how to identify and label speakers in your Descript transcript.

Quick summary

Descript's speaker detection feature automatically identifies distinct voices in your audio after transcription, letting you label each speaker directly in the transcript. You can trigger detection manually via audio settings and assign names to each speaker to keep your project organized.

Steps

  1. Open an existing project or start a new one by clicking "New Project".
  2. After transcription, Descript will automatically detect speakers if the audio is clear and has distinct voices.
  3. Go to the "Project" tab and click on the audio file you uploaded.
  4. Navigate to the audio settings, click "Detect Speakers," and choose the number of speakers in the audio.
  5. Wait for Descript to finish the speaker detection process.
  6. Alternatively, click "Identify Speakers" to manually trigger speaker identification.
  7. Add each speaker's name or select an existing name from the list, then click "Next."
  8. Click Close when finished — speaker labels will appear throughout your transcript.

📌 Why this matters

Descript's speaker detection feature solves one of the most time-consuming challenges in podcast and interview editing: manually identifying who said what. By automatically detecting and labeling distinct voices after transcription, Descript enables creators to produce speaker-attributed transcripts in minutes rather than hours. This is especially valuable for podcasters, journalists, and video editors who work with multi-speaker recordings and need accurate, searchable transcripts for editing, captioning, or repurposing content.
