Quick summary
Deleting a subtask in Jira requires Administrator permissions on the project — if the Delete option is missing, you must first grant yourself the correct role via Project Settings. Once the role is assigned, you can remove any subtask directly from the board using the three dot menu.
Steps
- If you don't see a Delete option for your subtasks, open the Gear icon in the top right and select Projects.
- Click the three dot menu next to your project and select Project Settings.
- Navigate to People in the left sidebar.
- Click Add people in the top-right corner.
- Add the relevant user and assign the Administrator role.
- Confirm the change — you will see a "New people added" confirmation prompt.
- Return to the board and click the three dot menu on the subtask you want to delete.
- You will now find the Delete option enabled in the menu.
- Click Delete again to confirm and permanently remove the subtask.
