Use this interactive demo to learn how to run a cross-tabulation analysis on your survey results.

Quick summary

Cross-tabulation in SurveyMonkey lets you compare survey responses across different audience segments by filtering results using the Compare by Question and Answer rule. Once configured, SurveyMonkey automatically generates a cross-tabulation table that reveals patterns and differences between respondent groups.

Steps

  1. Navigate to the survey you want to analyze and click on Analyze Results.
  2. In the Analyze Results tab, go to the Rule menu.
  3. Select Compare from the Rule menu options.
  4. From the dropdown, choose Compare by Question and Answer.
  5. Click the drop-down arrow to choose a question to compare.
  6. Select the answers that you want to compare.
  7. Click Apply to confirm your selections.
  8. SurveyMonkey will automatically generate a cross-tabulation table based on your selected questions and answers.

📌 Why this matters

Cross-tabulation is one of the most powerful survey analysis techniques available, allowing researchers and marketers to segment responses and uncover how different groups answered the same questions. SurveyMonkey's built-in cross-tab feature makes it easy to compare answers by demographic, behavior, or any other survey question — no external tools or spreadsheets required. This capability helps teams move beyond surface-level response summaries and identify statistically meaningful differences between audience segments. For anyone conducting customer research, employee feedback analysis, or market studies, mastering cross-tabulation in SurveyMonkey directly improves the depth and accuracy of data-driven decisions.
