Use this interactive demo to learn how to build a matrix question inside your SurveyMonkey survey.

Quick summary

A matrix question in SurveyMonkey lets you collect structured ratings across multiple items using a single grid-style question. This step-by-step walkthrough shows how to add and configure a Matrix/Rating Scale question in the survey editor from start to finish.

Steps

  1. Open an existing survey by clicking the ellipsis icon next to it.
  2. Select Edit survey from the drop-down menu.
  3. Navigate to the Design Survey section and click the + New Question button.
  4. Choose Matrix/Rating Scale from the question type dropdown to create a grid with rows and columns.
  5. Enter the general context or instruction in the main question text box.
  6. Under Row Choices, input each item, option, or sub-question you want respondents to evaluate.
  7. Under Column Choices, enter the answer options respondents will select from.
  8. Click Save to add the configured matrix question to your survey.
  9. Click Preview survey to review how the matrix question appears to respondents and make any final adjustments.

📌 Why this matters

Matrix questions are one of the most efficient ways to gather structured feedback across multiple items in a single survey question. SurveyMonkey's Matrix/Rating Scale question type lets researchers, HR teams, and marketers collect comparable, side-by-side responses without overwhelming respondents with repetitive individual questions. This format is especially valuable for measuring satisfaction, performance ratings, or product attribute rankings at scale. Using the built-in survey editor to configure row and column choices makes it fast to deploy professional, analysis-ready surveys without any technical expertise.
