How to Create a Component in Jira

Use this interactive demo to learn how to set up and assign components in your Jira project.

Quick summary

Jira components let you categorize and filter issues within a project for better team organization. This guide walks you through creating a component in Jira project settings and linking it to an issue from the board.


Steps

  1. Navigate to Project settings in the left sidebar of your Jira board.
  2. Scroll down the left sidebar to locate the Components section.
  3. Go to Jira components on the top right and turn off the Compass component toggle.
  4. Click Create component to start adding a new component.
  5. Name your component and hit Save to confirm.
  6. A confirmation prompt will appear confirming your component has been added.
  7. Return to your Issue card on the board.
  8. Click on Component in the issue detail view to open the assignment field.
  9. Your newly created component will appear in the dropdown, ready to be assigned.

Jira components are a powerful way to group and filter issues within a software project, giving teams clearer ownership and faster triage. Without components, large backlogs become difficult to navigate and issues lose context around which part of the product they belong to. By creating and assigning components directly in Jira project settings, teams can run targeted JQL queries, route work to the right sub-teams, and generate more meaningful reports.
