Use this interactive demo to learn how to add page numbers to your Adobe InDesign documents.

‍

‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to add page numbers in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To add pages to your project, go to 'Pages' in the right-side menu of your workspace.
  2. Use the Master Page to create and duplicate your design, including any text, across the subsequent pages.
  3. On the left page of the Master Page, insert a text box. Right-click inside it, then select 'Insert Special Character' → 'Markers' → 'Page Number.'
  4. A special character will appear in the text box on the Master Page. Duplicate the text box on the opposite page to match it.
  5. Once done, you have successfully added page numbers to the subsequent pages. Review each page and adjust the Master Page as needed.

📌 Why this matters

Adding page numbers through Master Pages saves you from manually updating each page when your document changes. You create the numbering system once, and it automatically adjusts as you add, remove, or rearrange pages. This becomes essential for multi-page documents like reports, magazines, or books where content shifts during revisions.

Master Pages also ensure consistent positioning and formatting across all pages, preventing the frustrating scenario where you finish a 50-page document only to realize the numbering is inconsistent or breaks when you make last-minute edits.
