Use this interactive demo to learn how to add a grid to your Adobe InDesign documents.

‍

‍

Here’s a simple and quick guide on how to add grid in Adobe InDesign:

‍

  1. To add grids and guides to your InDesign project, go to the top menu and click 'Layout.'
  2. Select 'Create Guides' to start customizing your grid.
  3. The Create Guides panel will open. Enter the number of columns and rows you want, and check 'Preview' to see the grid applied to your document.
  4. Once done, click 'OK' to proceed.
  5. Once your grid is applied, lock it by going to 'View' → 'Grids & Guides' → 'Lock Guides' to prevent accidental edits.
  6. A grid and guides have now been successfully added to your project.

📌 Why this matters

Grids transform your design from guesswork into precision. You'll align text, images, and elements consistently, creating professional layouts that look intentional rather than haphazard. Beyond basic alignment, grids establish visual hierarchy and rhythm across multi-page documents.

When you're working with complex publications like magazines or reports, the grid becomes your invisible framework that maintains coherence even when different team members contribute content. Locking the grid prevents accidental shifts that could throw off your entire layout system, saving hours of tedious repositioning later.
