How to Add Epic Link to Jira Ticket

Use this interactive demo to learn how to link an existing Jira issue to an Epic.

Quick summary

Adding an Epic Link to a Jira ticket connects an existing issue to a parent Epic directly from the Issue View. This lets teams organize work under the right Epic without recreating or moving tickets.

Steps

  1. Open your Jira account and select a project from the project list.
  2. Click your preferred issue to open it in the Issue View.
  3. At the top of the Issue View, click the 'Add Epic' button — this is the only way to link an existing issue to an Epic.
  4. After clicking 'Add Epic', select your preferred Epic from the dropdown list.
  5. That's it — you have successfully added the Epic Link to your Jira ticket.

📌 Why this matters

Linking Jira issues to Epics is essential for keeping agile projects organized and giving teams full visibility into how individual tasks roll up to larger initiatives. Without a clear Epic Link, sprint planning and roadmap tracking become error-prone and time-consuming. The 'Add Epic' button in Jira's Issue View provides the fastest way to associate any existing ticket with the correct Epic, ensuring accurate progress reporting and cleaner backlogs. Teams that consistently use Epic Links in Jira can better prioritize work, communicate delivery timelines, and align development efforts with business goals.
