How to Add Additional Assignee in Jira

Use this interactive demo to learn how to assign multiple users to a Jira issue with a custom field.

Quick summary

Jira's default Assignee field supports only one user per issue, but you can add multiple assignees by creating a custom User Picker field through Jira's project settings. This walkthrough covers every step needed to configure and surface that field across your issue types and screens.


Steps

  1. Click the gear icon in the top right corner to open Jira settings.
  2. Select Issues from the settings menu.
  3. In the Fields section, click Custom Fields.
  4. Click Create custom field to start building a new field.
  5. Select the field type User Picker (multiple users).
  6. Click Next to proceed to the field configuration screen.
  7. Name your field and click Create to save it.
  8. Configure the field to appear on the appropriate issue types and screens by selecting the checkboxes.
  9. Once selected, click Update to apply the changes.
  10. Users can now add multiple assignees to the custom Additional Assignees field while keeping the primary Assignee field intact.

📌 Why this matters

Jira only allows a single assignee per issue by default, which creates a blind spot when tasks require shared ownership across multiple team members. By creating a custom User Picker (multiple users) field, teams can formally track every contributor on an issue without losing the clarity of a primary responsible owner. This approach improves accountability, supports cross-functional collaboration, and keeps project reporting accurate. For teams managing complex sprints or shared workloads, adding multiple assignees in Jira is a practical configuration that scales with how modern teams actually work.
